Joseph’s Story
“This is Just a Miracle”

Joseph was out for an evening drive near his apartment on McKay Avenue when he spotted a new building under construction on Sussex Avenue. “I liked that it was concrete construction – it looked strong”.
He wondered what the building was about. This was a residential area with a school and a nursing home nearby. Was it for people with disabilities? He noticed a man standing out front and asked him who would live here.
The man he spotted was Michael, L’Arche’s Property Manager, who had been visiting the site. Michael explained that the building would be for people with and without disabilities. People could rent an apartment here; they just had to register with BC Housing.
“BC Housing! I have been with BC Housing for 25 years! I went home and prayed every morning and evening that I could live in this building”.
Eventually, he got more information and applied. “I kept praying. It’s a miracle that I’m here”.
He moved in during Christmas week and couldn’t be happier. “This apartment is bigger than my old studio apartment. I like to exercise, and I have enough room to do my yoga exercises every morning and evening. I have a washer and dryer in my suite – so convenient!”
Another positive aspect of living in a bigger suite is that he can have friends visit. He’s also slowly getting to know people in the building. From Kuniko, who works at the front desk, to people he meets in the elevator, “Everyone is so friendly”.
Joseph works part-time at the airport as a check-in agent, often helping passengers with mobility needs to get from gate to gate. He likes helping people and hopes to volunteer in a similar role at L’Arche.
In addition to having a larger apartment in a solidly constructed building that he shares with friendly people, Joseph also has a wonderful view from his third-floor balcony. He overlooks the courtyard and has a clear view of David Grey Park next to L’Arche.
“I’m so happy. It’s just a miracle that I’m here.”
