Our Supported Living Homes and Day Programs are designed to honour each person’s individual needs and interests. We provide supportive environments that foster connection, growth, and joy. Participants engage in various recreational, social, and volunteer activities tailored to their interests and abilities. Every day is filled with opportunities to build relationships, develop skills, and be part of something meaningful.
Expanding the Vision of Inclusion
In 2024, we expanded our mission by offering inclusive and welcoming housing to individuals who want to live as part of our housing. We also launched the Semi-Independent Living (SIL) Program, which encourages people to thrive semi-independently with minimal support. Many work or volunteer during the day and come together to share meals, laughter, and companionship in the evenings and on weekends.
Our Story: A Journey of Belonging
From a single home on Sussex Avenue to a thriving, multi-faceted community, our story is one of faith, courage, and unwavering belief in the beauty and worth of every person. And the journey is far from over—we’re just getting started.
In the beginning
Judie Leckie and Peggy McDowell came to Vancouver to open a L’Arche community. The community was given the building on Sussex Avenue by the United Church. The founding members having arrived from institutional settings like Woodlands, needed more than shelter. They needed connection, friendship, dignity, and a space to discover their gifts and flourish.
Growth, Vision, and Transformation
Sister Lucile the new Community Leader, divided the large building named Shiloah, into smaller, home-like settings. Three new Supported Living Homes were added along with Program and Office spaces. St. Joseph’s Workshop offered meaningful daytime activity to people in our Homes. This program would become L’Arche Wood Products and then Neighbours Helping Neighbours.
Recognition
L’Arche underwent CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accreditation for the first time and was awarded a three-year standing, the highest possible achievement. We won the Non-Profit of the Year Excellence Award by the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Board of Trade.
Building for the Future
L’Arche committed to redeveloping the Sussex property and creating a fully accessible, modern building that could welcome more people into the community. The “We All Belong” capital campaign was launched with a goal of raising $6 million to support the dream.
Transition Years
During construction, the residents of the main building moved into other nearby L’Arche Homes including a new Home on Irmin Street known as Cypress House. Program and offices were relocated to a temporary site in Burnaby. It was a time of both reflection and anticipation.
A New Chapter Begins
L’Arche Greater Vancouver turned 50 and saw its grand dream fulfilled. Residents and Assistants, including new Tenants moved into the new building. The Semi-Independent Living (SIL) Program was launched, which empowers members to live more independently while staying connected.
