Semi-Independent Living

At L’Arche Greater Vancouver, our Semi-Independent Living (SIL) Program empowers adults with developmental disabilities to live independently while staying connected to a caring, supportive community. Located at 7415 Sussex Avenue in Burnaby, each member has their own apartment and enjoys both autonomy and meaningful community life through shared activities, social gatherings, and individualized day-to-day support.

Life in the SIL Program

Although each SIL member has their own apartment, they can also access the community spaces for shared meals, games, and celebrations. They have the opportunity to participate in community-building activities like:

  • Movie nights
  • Group outings
  • Volunteering opportunities
  • Gardening, reading groups, and kindness clubs

This blend of independent living and community connection nurtures both personal growth and deep, lasting relationships. The goal of the SIL program is to support each member to reach their highest level of independence in daily living, decision-making, and relationships. Through ongoing encouragement and tailored support, members are empowered to:

  • Build confidence and practical life skills
  • Take on new responsibilities
  • Explore their interests and passions
  • Discover their unique place of belonging

Personalized Support for Success

SIL Program Assistants provide flexible, individualized support based on each person’s needs and goals. They are available during the day to assist with daily routines and to help members plan their week, manage tasks, and stay connected to their community. Support can be provided through a mix of one-on-one and small group settings for:

  • Grocery shopping
  • Budgeting and bill management
  • Booking and attending medical appointments
  • Navigating social relationships
  • Workplace and volunteer readiness
  • Emotional support and advocacy
