Safeguarding and Reporting

At L’Arche Greater Vancouver, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive community for everyone. Safeguarding is central to who we are and how we live out our mission.

Our Commitment to Safety

L’Arche Greater Vancouver has zero tolerance for any form of abuse, violence, harassment, or discrimination. Everyone in our community has the right to be treated with dignity and respect, and to feel safe.

We ensure all personnel are trained in abuse prevention and response. We also educate our members in ways that are accessible to them, so they can recognize abuse and know their rights.

Abuse Prevention and Reporting

The definition of abuse includes physical, emotional, psychological, financial, sexual, and verbal harm, as well as neglect or misuse of power.

Any person who witnesses or suspects abuse is required to report it immediately. Reports are handled promptly, respectfully, and confidentially. When necessary, we involve external authorities such as:

  • Fraser Health Licensing
  • Community Living BC
  • Police or emergency services
  • WorkSafeBC

Complaints and Grievances

We welcome concerns, complaints, and feedback as opportunities to improve. Whether you are a L’Arche member, family member, tenant, employee, casual support or volunteer – you have the right to raise a concern without fear of retaliation.

Complaint and Grievance Process

  1. Attempt Informal Resolution

    • Speak directly with the person involved
    • Seek help from a Supervisor or Coordinator, if needed
  2. Supervisor or Coordinator Mediation

    • Supervisor facilitates a conversation
    • Meeting may be documented
  3. Escalate to Executive Director

    • Submit a written grievance within 14 days of the incident
    • Executive Director investigates and meets with involved parties
    • Attempts are made to reach a resolution
  4. Board Review (if unresolved)

    • If resolution is not acceptable, the matter may go to the Board of Directors
    • Final decision is made
  5. External Complaint (if still unresolved)

    • Contact Fraser Health, CLBC, or WorkSafeBC depending on the nature of the issue

All concerns are taken seriously and followed up with timely responses. We believe that healing and ensuring justice begins with listening. We are committed to maintaining confidentiality throughout the process and provide support to all the individuals involved. Together, we strive to create a space where everyone belongs and thrives.

You can address your complaint through L’Arche Canada. It will be reviewed by a third-party and subsequently forwarded to the Director of Human Resources and the National Leader at L’Arche Canada for processing. Issues that are related to a local L’Arche community will be sent to the relevant Regional Leader to be addressed with the community.
